Love It or Leave It: Empties and Regrets

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the major downside to using drugstore products is not being able to "try before you buy". Over the years I have tried numerous failed products that I really disliked but I've also tried a lot that I have loved. So to help you a little more in your drugstore product search, I'm sharing my empties and regrets. All of my empties are empty because they worked well enough to finish them off so they're all products I love. And my regrets...well, those speak for themselves. Hopefully, I can help save you from those same product fails and maybe even help you find a new favorite! Enjoy!

  3. I mainly shop drugstore but for tinted moisturizer and hair products! Cute post! Oh, and just a tip...you can usually return any cosmetic/lotion/what have you, as long as it has 75% or more left!

  4. Really? I had no idea! Is it just certain places? I think most of it came from Walmart. I'm guessing you'd need your receipt? I'll definitely need to try that!

  5. While doing the "no poo method" how often and when would you use the coconut hair mask?

  6. So how do you recommend this method for someone who works out once or twice a day? The sweat just makes my feel super gross so I usually wash it at the end of the day. Granted I go through workout phases where I'm super consistent for a few months followed by a month or two of the laziest behavior you could imagine.

  7. I used the coconut hair mask when I was using "low poo" which essentially means you are transitioning out of regular shampoo use. There are clarifying shampoos out there that will strip your hair of all that gunk you're putting in it. Most shampoos contain damaging parabens and sulfates which are the same ingredients in laundry detergents, dishwashing detergents and even engine degreasers! The clarifying shampoo will remove your hair of all that. The problem with that is it can strip some of your natural "healthy" oils if used too much and the coconut oil mask helps put some of that moisture back in. I wouldn't recommend it when going full blown No 'Poo however; you don't need it. The No Poo Method is good because it doesn't strip your natural oils, therefor you don't need to put any more back in. I haven't used the coconut oil mask in about 8 months. Hope this helps! :)

  8. I am actually going to do a post on this soon because I have been asked this question quite a few times lately. I'm too lazy to workout everyday but there are a lot of people out there who use No Poo and exercise :) You shouldn't use the baking soda wash everyday because it can be too drying but there are some things you can do to keep clean on in between days and still stay on schedule. You can use them all or just a few; whatever works best for you.

-brush with your natural bristle brush to evenly distribute the oils (You can always do this, even if you're not working out. It really helps to distribute oils!)
    - try gently rubbing your scalp with warm water only
    - rub your scalp with a lemon juice mix (a 1/4 cup lemon juice to 1 cup water ratio; mix as much as you need for your hair length) and rinse. It will get rid of the excess oils and sweat without stripping your scalp.
    - use a light sprinkling of dry shampoo on dry hair or even a LIGHT sprinkling of baking soda on dry scalp. It will absorb the sweat and oils and also deodorize. (Think baking soda in your fridge for smells; same concept)
    - “wash” with an egg. It will get rid of the extra grease and sweat without stripping your hair. Don't do this daily though because you can put too much protein into your hair. I'd say just a couple of times a week on really sweaty days.

I hope this was helpful for you and what you were looking for. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Good luck! :)

  9. I love your blogs! I was cracking up when you were eating your sour punch straw! Thanks for the review- I will keep those products in mind… I was sad that you didn't like the primer. I need a new primer and have no idea what to buy.

  10. This may be a stupid question, but does the method change for shorter hair? I have a shaggy pixie style (which I am growing out) and I'm really interested in this method. I am nervous because I am just so used to shampoos, conditioners, and products but I really want healthier pure hair.

  11. I imagine the only difference you might have would be how to go about keep ACV away from your roots. Being that you have short hair, you probably won't need it near as much anyway but you may have to take more care to keep it on the length of your hair. It's not that ACV will hurt the roots of your hair, you just don't need to condition there.

  12. Question: my hair is thin and gets VERY oily if I go literally a day without washing it. I am definitely willing to try this, but would it be ok to wash with my regular shampoo maybe once or twice a week to keep the oil down or would that reverse what the "no poo"" is trying to do and be unproductive? Thanks!

  13. Hey Guys! I just started the method to-day. But there's one thing that's been bothering me: I live in Rio de Janeiro, where is hot even in the winter. We're in the summer now and it is ESPECIALLY hot. So, I sweat a lot. A LOT. Plus, when I work out, I sweat A LOT. I mean, A LOT again. So, washing my hair is something I HAVE to do everyday, because it gets oily and sweaty (and because it's refreshing).

Is it really okay to just get my hair wet between the washes? Doesn't it get tangly or even a little bit stinky from just getting it wet? What should I do to avoid this?

And I have another question: is it okay to use products like Moroccan Oil, for example, after my hair is dry?

Thanks a lot! Hope it works! I dye my hair and would really love it if I could stop shampooing :)

  14. I just did a post today about helping the smell of your hair! Good timing for your question, you should definitely read that! haha And actually, on Friday I have a post specifically on how to go about using No Poo if you have to deal with sweat on a daily schedule. DEFINITELY check those out for more in-depth answers to your questions. You can use Moroccan oil but you want to keep it as close to the ends of your hair as possible; just really make sure it doesn't make contact with your roots or you can end up with oily hair days before you should be washing. I can't answer your sweat question in too much detail here because there are entire recipes but you can rinse everyday and use dry shampoo. I promise though, everything you need to know will be in Friday's post! :)

  15. Depending on what shampoo you use, you will be counteracting everything No Poo does and making your hair even more greasy. If you use a natural, organic shampoo that doesn't strip your hair's healthy oils, you could use shampoo. If you use a normal drugstore shampoo, however, you will just strip ALL of your oil and your hair will just keep overproducing. If you do have oily hair normally though, I might suggest using white vinegar instead of apple cider and also use it sparingly. Hope this helped! :)

  16. Wow, thanks! I'll definitely do the oil thing and can't wait for the post on friday... This has really been bugging me and I kind of delayed starting the method cause of this

  17. I am on my 4th week of No Poo and must say I am shocked at the results. Everyone is remarking about the way my hair looks. I love the fact that my hair no longer gets that stale funky smell it always did on day two of using shampoo. My latest quandry is.....I just got a perm!! ( Yes I know it is a chemical process, but it is a necessity right now with my job) It is right now time for me to wash my hair for the first time after the perm. What can I expect? Is it going to wash the perm out? I had an old perm when I started the NoPoo and it seemed to be fine. Just wondered if anyone else dealt with this.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hey, Linda! The only difference I think a perm might make, is the frequency you use No Poo. The baking soda and vinegar shouldn't hurt your perm or curls but after the chemicals of your perm, your hair will be more delicate and fragile. The chemicals in a perm majorly alter the ph of your hair. I would just take extra care to keep the baking soda on your roots alone and I would try to space your washes out as infrequently as you can so you're not putting anymore stress on your hair while it's ph adjusts. Other than that, I think you'll be fine. I'm glad to hear it's been working out well for you so far! :)

  19. Like you I color my hair regularly mainly because my hair wont pick a color of regrowth to stick with so ive decided to stay dark which means bleach blonde regrowth -_- BUT I was wondering if you get your hair colored at a salon if so what do you do when they go to rinse your color and wash your hair? Im thinking it might be odd to whip out my box of baking soda and gallon of ACV but desperate times call for desperate measures right?? jk help! also how do you keep the baking soda just on your roots?? ive been using the premix method and I am strugglin. and last question has it made your hair grow faster?

  20. Hey, Abby! I am so sorry it has taken me so long to answer your question! It seems my comment notifications aren't doing a very good job at notifying me! Sorry! :( BUT I hope I can still help.... I color my hair, myself, at home. I use the conditioner that comes with the dye and I count this as a "wash". So basically in my regular schedule, I will wash, wait 7 days, dye it, wait 7 days and wash again. If that makes sense? I just substitute one wash a month with my dye. The conditioner that comes in the box isn't a "good" conditioner to use with all of it's chemicals in it BUT the chemicals in the dye itself are so much worse and you really do need that conditioner. This is the ONLY time I use a conditioner. I don't think my hair will ever reach that great state that other's get because I dye it but using this method has definitely still helped to repair the damage the dye has done. If you're getting it done at a salon, I would suggest letting them use conditioner. Dye is just too damaging. The vinegar is great for replacing the healthy oils that are lost naturally but it can't make up for the complete stripping that dye does. It's just an unfortunate side effect of dying, As for keeping the baking soda at the roots, I purposely do not use the premix method for this reason. It's very hard to keep it where you want it when it's in a liquid form. I put the dry baking soda directly on my wet scalp and rub it in with my finger tips. This helps to keep it on my roots. Using the dry baking soda can be tricky though because you really have to pay attention to how much you use. You need much less doing it this way. And for your last question, my hair has ALWAYS grown fast. That's why I dye it so frequently (4 weeks on the dot). In just 4 weeks, my hair already has a good inch of regrowth. So I can't say it's grown any faster per say, but it definitely hasn't slowed it down! This is probably the longest answer to a question EVER! haha But I hope that even though it was late, it still helps. If you have any more questions feel free to ask and I promise I will get back to you much more quickly!! Hope this helped you some, Abby! Good luck! :)
