DIY Zit Zapper: Aspirin and Lemon Juice Face Mask

So, zits. Aren't they fabulous? No, they aren't. I hate even the word. It even just sounds gross! But, we all get them; we all have to deal with them at some point. Me now more than ever. I have more breakouts now, close to age 30, than I did as a teenager. I guess I'm just lucky like that. You gotta do something about them, but what? Well, I've got the answer. You guys know how I love my DIY face masks and this one is no exception!
What if there really is something that can stop your breakouts in their tracks? Be awesome, right? And what if I told you it was something you can make yourself with only 2 ingredients from the grocery? Ok, I'm just talking crazy now. But, I'm not! 2 simple ingredients can work magic on a disgusting zit...overnight
So this recipe comes from Dr. Oz. I'm not a big follower of Dr. Oz but Oprah loves him and that's good enough for me. The science behind this Aspirin and Lemon Juice concoction is it's great for your complexion because the aspirin contains salicylic acid and the lemon juice has Vitamin C.
Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid): decomposes to salicylic acid which increases cell exfoliation and is anti-bacterial

Lemon juice: Citric acid wards off oxidation (like the browning of an apple slice)

Meaning, that you don't have to wait until you have a breakout, you can boost your complexion anytime.
This is incredibly easy to make. All you need is:
  • Aspirin- non-coated makes easier for crushing and dissolving
  • Lemon Juice- from an actual lemon or from the containers in the produce section
  • Something to crush the aspirin- I just use the back of a large spoon
  • A container to store it in- I use these

  1. So first, you want to break up the aspirin. I use the back of the spoon and a reusable food container. If you are just wanting a one-time spot treatment, you need 3-4 aspirin. If you are planning on making a larger batch to store, you'll need somewhere around 36-48, depending on how much you want to make.
  2. Combine the lemon juice with the crushed aspirin. There is no correct amount here. You're wanting to make a paste so use as much as you need to dissolve all of the aspirin.
  3. For a full face mask: apply your mask evenly and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse as you would a face wash and rub in gentle circles.
  4. For spot treatment: apply to your blemishes (that sounds better than zit right?) and leave on for at least 45 minutes. I do this before bed and just leave it on overnight. It dries hard so you don't have to worry about ruining your pillow or anything. Then rinse in the morning with water same as you would for the face mask.

I won't gross you out with before and after pictures because (ew) who wants to see that?? But I can have the biggest, grossest blemish and by morning, it looks as if it is at least a week old. The healing time is ridiculous. So pick up some lemon juice and aspirin next time you're at the grocery!

  3. I'll be trying this also... It seems totally unfair that I had terrible skin as a teenager/young adult and now I'm breaking out again too. :/ I think it has to do with hormones from being pregnant and now nursing, but still. Thanks for the tip!
